The U.S. Naval Academy's coat-of-arms has been an integral part of the Academy's identity and tradition since its design in 1867. Alumnus Park Benjamin designed the seal, which consists of a hand triumphantly holding a trident, and the Naval Academy's Latin motto: Ex scientia tridens (from knowledge, seapower).
